ICU

  • Learn to manage broad range of critical care problems

  • Procedural skills including intubation, thoracentesis and placement of central and arterial lines

Family Medicine Inpatient Service

2 blocks

  • Responsibility for inpatient care of FHC and primary care clinic patients
  • General medicine patients who represent a typical family physician’s service
  • Daily rounds with senior resident and attendings
  • Supervised by senior resident and family medicine directors

Obstetrics

2 blocks

  • Weekly morning report OB conference with all residents
  • Increased OB responsibilites, more complex problems

Ambulatory Gynecology

1 block

  • Review Comprehensive Gynecology text
  • Weekly and monthly colposcopy lectures
  • Opportunity to certify in colposcopy
  • Extensive outpatient gynecology work with community teaching attendings

Inpatient Pediatrics

1 block

  • Assume a more supervisory role for first-year residents
  • Curricular focus on GI, neurology and cardiology topics
  • Online learning for pediatric radiographs

Cardiology

1 block

  • Teaching by cardiologists on a brisk service with a wide spectrum of cardiac cases
  • Opportunity to use simulated heart program to review arrhythmias and auscultation exercises
  • Emphasis on EKG reading
  • Develop understanding of indications and interpretations of cardiac testing and procedures

Infectious Disease

1 block

  • Full management of critically ill patients acting as consultant with specialist support
  • Sharpen skills of diagnosis of infectious disease including use of microbiology laboratory
  • One-on-one discussions with ID faculty
  • Weekly ID resident/student presentations

Gastroenterology

1 block

  • Assessment and management of GI problems
  • Consultation service from large specialty group noted for outstanding teaching
  • Busy inpatient GI service

Ambulatory Pediatrics

1 block

  • Extensive outpatient pediatric work with pediatricians from Crusader Clinic, a federally funded community health center
  • A valuable experience in the office management of pediatric problems
  • Curricular focus on adolescent health and pediatric behavior disorders including eating, depression and ADHD

Emergency Medicine

1 block

  • Application of ATLS and ACLS principles
  • Evaluate and treat emergency patients including trauma and severe illness
  • Develop urgent care skills
  • Supervision by certified emergency physicians

Elective

1 block

University Family Health Center(outpatient)

  • Second-year residents generally spend three half-days per week in clinic, further developing a panel of clinic patients
  • Increased office procedures
