Dixon town squareDixon Rural Training Track

Dixon offers a rural family medicine clerkship to fourth-year students from LCME-accredited medical schools and from selected WHOaffiliated
international medical schools.
Under its affiliation with the University of Illinois College of Medicine, the faculty of the Dixon Rural Training Track provide supervision
for this four-week experience. Students will obtain an overview of family medicine as it is practiced in a smaller hospital in a rural
setting. Students will be primarily assigned to a teaching family medicine physician of their choosing. In the Dixon area there are several
such family physicians of varying ages, practice locations and gender from whom to select.
Students will be involved with patient care activities to the extent of their clinical abilities in both the outpatient family medicine
office and with inpatients at KSB Hospital in Dixon. The clerkship may be tailored to the specific needs and interests of the student.
The Dixon RTT fourth-year clerkship is intended to provide experience in or exposure to :

  • Concepts of screening, prevention and health maintenance
  • Managing common problems in ambulatory family medicine
  • Methods and goals of patient education
  • The practice of family medicine outside of the office
  • Common office procedures and clinical skills
  • Principles and practice of continuing care
  • Ability to integrate patient care with knowledge of the natural history of health and disease
  • An appreciation of the special strengths and challenges of family medicine as practiced in a rural setting

Evaluations of the students are completed by precepting faculty. These will identify progress and problems during the clerkship and the
degree of mastery the student has achieved at the end of the experience. Evaluation forms are submitted to the clerkship coordinator in
Rockford, who will complete a composite evaluation in conjunction with the student. These forms are then sent to the medical education
office of the student’s school.

Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital

Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital has been an active participant in the health of Dixon and the surrounding communities for more than 100 years. From the day KSB’s doors opened on January 1, 1897, the mission of the hospital has been to provide skilled, compassionate healthcare in a facility equipped with the latest technology. All these years later, that mission is unchanged. KSB Hospital remains committed to the communities we serve. That commitment can be seen in KSB’s growth. In recent years, the hospital has expanded beyond the walls of the hospital to provide physician care in facilities in Commerce Towers and Edwards Clinic in Dixon. The hospital has also built clinic facilities in Oregon, Polo, Amboy and Ashton to improve the healthcare access for the people in those communities. One of the most significant developments in KSB’s history occurred on April 1, 2004, with the acquisition of 11 former Medical Arts Center physicians for addition to the KSB Medical Group. At the same time, KSB purchased the 68,500 sq. ft. downtown Dixon building that was home to those physicians. The building is now known as the Town Square Centre.

Within the hospital there has been growth as well. New and updated facilities can be found throughout the halls at KSB. Most recently, KSB has invested millions in the latest diagnostic radiology equipment to give doctors state-of-the-art tools to allow them to help patients more quickly and effectively. A new cardiovascular catheterization laboratory, as well as improved and expanded lab facilities, an expanded and relocated gift shop and chapel mark some of the recent improvements at KSB.

Beyond those physical improvements, the individuals who work in those and all areas of KSB are among the finest healthcare providers anywhere. In recent years we have asked, “What makes us special?” and answered with, “It’s the people.” We truly believe it is the people of KSB that set us apart from other healthcare providers. Our staff combines knowledge and skill with a strong sense of compassion creating a warm, reassuring atmosphere.

KSB Hospital is a 100-bed acute care facility offering a variety of ancillary services, including:

  • 24-hour emergency care
  • Medical/surgical unit
  • Radiology
  • Behavior health services
  • Cardiac rehabilitation
  • Home care
  • Hospice
  • Intensive care unit
  • Obstetrics
  • Pediatrics unit
  • Laboratory services
  • Physical therapy
  • Skilled care unit
  • Sleep lab
  • Sports and occupational medicine
  • Surgery

Town Square Centre

As mentioned above, in April, 2004 KSB Hospital expanded both the size of its medical group and its real estate holdings with the addition of 11 former Medical Arts Center physicians and the purchase of the 68,500 sq. ft. downtown Dixon office building those physicians called home. The building, now known as the Town Square Centre, is also home to the Dixon Rural Training Track in family medicine.

Town Square Centre, located in the heart of downtown Dixon, has 10 physicians and two mid-level providers. Along with family medicine physicians the TSC also houses specialists in the areas of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Ophthalmology.

The Dixon Rural Training Track’s model office, the Town Square Centre, is housed on the building’s main level. It has been newly remodeled and has internet-equipped “mini-offices” to accommodate each resident.
